Just to clear up confusion - the reference FLAC encoder has a setting
of 0-8.

Other FLAC encoders can go higher, some (flake) as high as 12 - but
this may cause problems decoding.

FLAC -8 decodes perfectly on an SB.

It used to be that at -8 you spent a lot more CPU time for just a bit
more compression than at -5.  However 1.1.3 had considerable
compression improvements and 1.1.4 had considerable speed improvements
(1.2.1 even more so) so it depends on encoder version.  Plus modern
CPUs like the Core 2 Duo can bust through FLAC encoding very, very
quickly.
