I use the Mac OS X app "Max" for ripping and encoding to FLAC.

This has a number of encoder settings for FLAC. Could someone tell me
what effect they have on the audio quality of the FLAC, please?

In particular:

There are 8 (+ a custom setting) compression levels. I use the default
setting of 5. Presumably 8 is a more compressed file; if it's still
Lossless, why is there a choice? What would be the benefit of a bigger
file if the quality was the same?

With a custom level set for compression, a number of other settings are
available, including:

QLP coefficient precision
Min and Max residual partition order
Maximum LPC order

You can also "enable mid-side coding for stereo input" and enable
"loose mid-side adaptive switching for stereo input".

I get great results from the default settings, but an curious to know
about these options.

Thanks . . .
