I used to use a command-line program (on Linux) called "gramofile" that
did a fairly good job at de-clicking and track detection. I haven't had
time for ripping vinyl for a while now, so I have no idea if it is still
around, and can barely remember its features.

If planning to do some processing - volume adjustment, de-clicking,
etc., I would probably use a longer word length (i.e., higher than 16
bit) in order to preserve fidelity. I seem to remember reading
somewhere that this was "best practice" as doing everything in 16 bit
tended to "lose" bits in some processing.

Plus the Squeezebox can play these higher resolution recordings.
