I've done some more checking and it appears that the use of both WMP and
iTunes on the same library messes it up. WMP isn't changing the genre
tags from words to numbers (but I did find out that the numbers
correspond to the text value) and it appears that iTunes is the
culprit. 

To test this I ripped a few of my disks as AAC. Then realized that I
didn't want to install the things to play them, converted them to MP3
(using iTunes).  The resulting files when opened in MP3Tag-Tools had
some of the genres converted to numbers. The only way to fix them was
to delete the tags completely and then create new ones. After this
iTunes seamed to leave things alone. 

I've abandoned WMP as it writes ID3V1.x tags and the 2.x tags are used
by SS so I'm a bit stuck here. 

Note: I run SlimNAS and iTunes is on my Vista desktop.
