Actually, the term "jitter" has been applied to three separate phenomena which are related to digital audio and CD extraction:
1. The clock timing uncertainty at the recording ADC and playback DAC. As has been pointed out, the extraction process has no effect on these. 2. The timing uncertainty in the Eight-to-Fourteen modulated "RF" read from the disc. I believe this is, in large part, caused by tiny inaccuracies in the replication process used to make the "stampers" and the molding process itself. This uncertainty, if large enough, can cause errors in EFM demodulation. On problem discs, Exact Audio Copy may attempt to get a better read where the "RF" jitter interacts more favorably with the EFM demodulator by reading the same section of the disc at different speeds. 3. The seek uncertainty of the CDROM drive. Exact Audio Copy does overlapping reads and compares the audio data and stitches together a continuous stream.
