This is a question best answered by:

NAS

Look: as tempting as it is to install (flash) stuff to a NAS, the whole
purpose of NAS is that it can check it's own integrity. It does
storage.

It stands alone and does just that. If you want mirroring or raid 5,
you can count on it's doing what the software was designed for.

It will check it's recoverability every month or when you tell it to.

Most importantly, if it doesn't have something else flashed into it,
the maker will help with bare metal recovery.

I'm a big fan of open source but when it comes to all of the hours I've
spent sending CD's to storage, a little commercialization is cool..
