Of course if you're doing this, ALAC can be overkill for iPod use
alone. Most headphones won't show up the difference between it and high
bitrate mp3. ALAC also eats up the iPod batteries quicker.

A dual FLAC/mp3 library would make a lot of sense. Backups should be
off-site anyway.
