I've found I can't hear the difference between mp3 (at, say, 192kb/s VBR) and a lossless format in the noisy environment that is a car, no matter how good the ICE install. mp3 means I get more tunes on my 60GB iPod than I would if I used a lossless format. I'd actually prefer to convert to aac (better quality for same size, or small size for same quality) but I can't find a decent encoder and tagging library that I can script.
