(As a proper Brit, who believes the rest of the world should just speak English, there is of course no need for anything other than 8-bit characters, so I have no truck with Unicode).
Have you checked the end of the file? It's a long time since I used APE tags, but I'm pretty sure they are placed at the end of the file, and begin with the characters "APE".
