Isn't smart gain explained in the settings section? When playing subsequent tracks from the same album, the "album" replaygain value is used, otherwise the "track" replaygain value is used. This helps keep the relative volume from tracks on the same album intact. Since track gain and album gain values are usually different, then yes, you could expect a volume difference when you move from playing an album to playing single tracks. I'm not sure how noticeable it is in practice, though. Depends on the album.
