so it makes sense for ummagumma when there are clearly different yet
smaller differing values, but not for other 2 disc albums even if they
have larger differences, but are studio only?  or live only?

what sense does that make?

personally, i'd contend that any value greater than 1db (difference) is
always discernable, under otherwise quiet listening conditions.  but as
i've said, thats a subjective judgment call.

i've checked a number of multidisc sets i have...  some live, some
studio, some compilations, some more than 2 discs... etc, and i have
found it is not uncommon for a db difference of up to 3 or 4 db between
a "highest" disc and a "lowest" one.  and thats only on the spot
checking i have done so far.

my question is why WOULDN'T you do per disc album RG?  if it brings
each disc to a reference level, and does so more accurately than your
way, (which there can be no question mathematically that it does) than
why not do it?
