An interesting thread, though the thought of how much work it would be
to fix my library is daunting!

I usually prefer to have albums listed by year of first release,
regardless of current source. For a few jazz albums, I use the
recording date. For classical works, I've sometimes used the
composition year. However, both of these are too tedious to tag up all
the time. I just live with whatever comes out of dbPowerAmp's
MetaSearch unless I vehemently disagree.

But I digress... or am about to...

When I started buying CDs, I started a DB (initially in a
self-extracting awk script!) that included the purchase date as a
field. I've been mad enough to keep it up ever since. It's been through
the mill of umpteen kinds of DB, but bad experiences with DBs that
change my data for me without consent mean that its current definitive
version is a CSV file! A key acid test of any DB for me is whether I
can easily search for day+month irrespective of year; it's astonishing
how few support this on date-valued fields. (For the DB I use on my
iPaq, I had to add a separate field that's a text encoding of the
date.) That way, I can see what things I bought 10 years ago today,
say.

(The other main reason for having the CD-DB on the iPaq is to stop me
from buying something I already have. It hasn't always worked...)

Now, it would be nice to be able to browse by purchase date in
SqueezeCenter. I can just about imagine how to use CustomBrowse and
CustomScan to set this up; but by now the data-entry problem is just
too daunting! And there's no guarantee that my CD-DB's Artist/Album
fields would match those in SC, so any kind of automated tag-population
by query is doomed largely to failure. And what about all those albums
I've bought umpteen times? Hmm, I'm in danger of turning a daunting
data-entry problem into a daunting coding problem... :-)
