I tend to play safe and have my amp set at a level which I know will not send any LP into clipping. That means some albums will be recorded at a slightly lower level than others, but on balance it seems to work. Not suggesting that is good for you, but for me time is more precious than getting the ultimate in audio fidelity. Re Pat's comment on phono pre-amp, I am comparing listening off the amp (via a headphone amp attached to the record-out sockets) while recording and then replaying the resultant WAV file, so the (slight) reduction in dynamics occurs somewhere in the loop between record out and record in. Unlikely to be the phono stage. There is no facility to set levels on the record-out of the pre-amp or the input to the sound card, so I have the sound card hooked up to the main pre-amp out (that would normally go to the power amp) so can control levels using the volume control of the amp. That could produce some of the difference. It could also, of course, be the analogue amp driving the output stage of the sound card, in which case the lack of dynamics is not inherent in the WAV (or FLAC) so the SqueezeBox might be playing it with the correct dynamics. There are plenty of stages in this process that could be improved - given time and money. I do suspect, however, that a better quality ADC might be a good investment at some point.
