I've just discovered that my server (a cheap laptop that was sold
without an OS) cannot rip CDs reliably. I have one example where the
result is horrible distorted. It sounds clipped as if the CD is too loud
and also has a persistent 'crackling/buzzing'.

The DVD drive is a TSST-L663C.

That suggests to me that the DVD drive is okay but that there's a
driver problem somewhere. What is the logic chain when ripping a CD? In
particular does it go through the sound system? I had to dig around a
lot to find decent drivers for the RealTek HD chipset. The ones that
Windows 7 installed had similar 'crackling/buzzing' on general output
whereas the current ones do not.

I have another machine I can rip with but it'd be more convenient if I
could do it on the server.

It's rather strange that I only have one CD with this particular
problem. The machine plays the CD back just fine and it doesn't sound
different to any other CD. For what it's worth the CD is 'The Platinum
Collection' a collection of Dollar's greatest hits so it's mostly 80s
music transfered to CD. I can't really understand why this particular CD
should be causing grief.
