A lossles rip can always be transcoded to a lossles format for your
daily use.

ripping lossy is a waste of time, if later down the road one wants to
use a different format, if you have the original rip's in a lossles 
format like flac. Then you can batch convert to something else .

converting lossy to lossy gives you problems in the end .

Besides a lossles rip is a backup of your CD , if your kids trash it or
the house burns down you have the files on your of-site backup disc
(note to self by that extra usb drive now, I have not finalized my extra
backup yet )

I think FLAC is an excellent choice as an archiving standard as EBU has
adopted it as such ? it support many channels and bit-rates
