I essentially do something in between what you want to do and what Garym
says he does.

I have a lot of archives thanks to archive.org and etree.org. In my
own efforts to keep things straight, I too have create album artists
such as you are trying:

Album Artist = Pearl Jam (Live)
Artist = Pearl Jam

The problem you are having is that by default the squeezebox server
will show you both artists and album artists.

The only solution to really separate the album artists from the song
artists (e.g. Pearl Jam as the song artist from Pearl Jam or Pearl Jam
(boot) as the album artist) is to utilize the Custom Browse Plugin and
create a custom menu based on Album Artists only.

This is what I have done. It made life a lot simpler by only having
album artists show up in a menu, and it has made everything more
compatible with my portable MP3 player and my desktop player
(MediaMonkey). I don't worry about compilation tags, I can set album
artists however I want, and I can set track artists appropriately
without worrying about an album becoming a "compilation". This is also
great for keeping composers out of the mix.

Separately, I've setup up a custom browse menu for song artists in the
occasional instances where I like to find music by an artist on
compilations or as a guest artist.

Ultimately, it has allowed me to keep my live/bootleg discs out of the
way of the regular releases without completely filtering them out. I do
however, find it useful to setup a "genre" tag for these albums that is
distinct so that if I am listening to my collection on random with a
dynamic playlist, I can set a filter to avoid that genre.
