Artist should be thought of as "track artist". Album Artist should be thought of as "where I would file this under in a record store" So while AA is defined as the artist that is responsible for the whole album (if different from any of the individual track artists), you can also use it to achieve lots of nifty effects: filing one album under multiple artists (multiple AA tags), and canonical artist names (file Elvis Costello and the Attractions and Elvis Costello under "Elvis Costello"). And you can do all of this without violating any tagging specs (or tag mangling as it's cometimes called) Sakkerju;605034 Wrote: > Main goal for me to use AA is actually to surpress the diversity of A's > from the main list. I usually use the AA tag for more or less the same reason. COMPILATION=1 is just a way to signal that an album should be filed under "Various Artists". This can be in addition to any AA tags you've defined, or if no AA tags are defined then it is filed exclusively under Various Artists. Getting all the artists popping up on the list is actually not handled via tagging, it's a server-side configuration option. Try to think of tagging and display as two totally separate things, even though one leads to the other. Tagging is designed to unambiguously provide the software with enough information that it knows everything it needs to know about the files. If you do it correctly, and the software is smart enough to understand correctly-tagged files (a fairly big "if"...), you should really only need to do it once and forget about it, even if you want to dramatically change the way you organize your music later. The display/organization options should be entirely configurable on the software end without changing tags. That said, SBS excels at reading tags and gleaning from them everything it needs to know about your files (and even guessing when the tags are inadequate). However, SBS often falls down in the display/organization department. I hope you can find something that works for you! -- CatBus ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CatBus's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=7461 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=84838 _______________________________________________ ripping mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/ripping
