It's happened with both. What I thought would be an easy check is to compare two versions of the same single artist album I have ripped twice - one version is stereo, the other mono. Looking at extended tags in MP3tag I can't see any difference between them, yet one displays as 11 albums, all with the same title and 1 track each, the other as 1 album with 11 tracks.
