I do similar to Aubuti. I tend to end up with situations like you do with Jazz Artists and variations of their bands. The ARTIST in my case tends to follow the example as Aubuti shows.
Album Artist, I tend to go with where I am most likely to look or the first billing. I tend to browse by Album Artist, so I go by where I'd browse to first (if that makes sense). For the Robert Plant and Alison Krause example, I actually use Robert Plant as my Album Artist. The purpose is that I don't have any other Alison Krause albums and I tend to look for it under Robert Plant. In other words... Do what seems natural to your situation.
