As I see it, there are two questions here. How to deal with variations
of an artist's bands/combos and how to deal with multiple artists.

For the "John Abercrombie Trio" , "John Abercrombie Quartet" question,
I would simply tag these all as "John Abercrombie", otherwise you end
up with endless variations. Another example is "Tom Petty" vs. "Tom
Petty & the Heartbreakers". I tag them both as "Tom Petty".

For dealing with multiple, equally credited artists, there are several
ways to handle it:

ALBUMARTIST=John Abercrombie, Dave Holland & Jack DeJohnette
ARTIST=John Abercrombie
ARTIST=Dave Holland
ARTIST=Jack DeJohnette

or pick one as the 'leader':

ALBUMARTIST=John Abercrombie
ARTIST=John Abercrombie
ARTIST=Dave Holland
ARTIST=Jack DeJohnette

or pick none and let Squeezebox Server list all three because there is
no ALBUMARTIST:

ARTIST=John Abercrombie
ARTIST=Dave Holland
ARTIST=Jack DeJohnette

I tend to favor the first approach, which treats the trio as a band. I
sometimes use the second if the other players aren't generally known as
group leaders or the combo isn't really well recognized as such. Since I
always tag every track with an ALBUMARTIST, I never use the third
approach.
