another variant preferred by some is to simply make a multi disc set one
album be renumbering the songs and place them all in the same folder and
adjust the tags accordingly .

I don't do that . The reasonings seems to be that discs is a limit from
the CD system and thus artificial in an file server system an album is
an " release " when delivered on CD it must be in 74 minute plastic
pieces, but not on the server .

But sometimes it makes sense to have disc number for everyone, take
Rounder records 25years 9 disc compilation as example, where every disc
has a particular music style and are not continuation of the preceding
disc, it makes some thematic sense to split them.
