You could use mysql strings to do the same thing to keep away from M$ products, but then even using MySQL Manager, volunteers likely would have the knowhow to be able to update the specific fields alone. Anybody with a better idea like a custom developed form to do the same would work OK as well. Libre/Open Office Base has the capability, however it doesn't have the user base to have developed any form designs to make it as user friendly yet. Open office base has been taken over by Oracle/Sun and likely any new addons like form/report design will be a "premium pay for add-on" to the basic freebie package.
