Importing large Libraries of Mp3s is not a problem.
The specifics of audio Vault are unknown to me. But someone else on
this list might be able to help.
Probably the best way to try out Rivendell is to try out one of the
Demo versions of rivendell. It appears you already have tried them in
Virtual machines.
Have you thought about visiting a station that is already running Rivendell?

For an underlying OS I would recommend Ubuntu... but without the Unity
interface... it can be very buggy. Linux Mint would be a good
compromise, but I haven't tried it with Rivendell.
