You can tell it's designed with touchscreens in mind. Touch overlays are handled outside of Rivendell, and are part of the operating system. To Rivendell, they are just a standard user interface, like a mouse. Many modern *nix operating systems will recognize USB touch overlays immediately, and after a simple calibration you're ready to go. Serial (RS232) overlays are a little more involved, but still not too bad. Does your overlay use USB or serial to communicate?
