Hi Robert!

This is how we do it, I will ask the person that helped set it up, but
basically, VLC runs 24/7 and there are a pair of macros that switch
Rivendell on to the VLC output and then to switch off of it.  I can send
you the 'code' in the RD language for those macros.  I recall that the main
challenge with our doing this was getting our audio outputs 'mapped.'  But,
if we were able to figure it out, then anyone can do it.

There are some problems with this, however.  Mostly it's that on occasion,
VLC seems on (via the GUI), but no output from it is being fed to
Rivendell.  The 'fix' is to restart VLC every once-in-a-while.

There is a way that's been suggested to us from this list that apparently
avoids this issue, which is running VLC via console.  However, to date we
aren't able to get this to work from Rivendell ....
