For the record, I found another 8x2 in a closet that works perfectly.
The original switch appears to be an early model with a different style of
connectors on the back. It works reliably with Wireready, or with commands
manually entered via Putty, but not with Rivendell.
However, the other 8x2 works fine, so problem solved.
