That's why I rely on external VU meters, and just apply or remove gain to
get the average level where I want it. I havent' used peak normalisation in
about 4 years.

And Jay: I feel your pain with aspect ratios.

That is misleading.

Rivendell normalization is based on the PEAK level.  The usual
analog "0 VU" is based on the AVERAGE level.

In typical programming, peak is 10-15 db above average.

I think that was the reasoning, but it doesn't work.  I set
normalizing to -3.   I'm thinking of just turning it off.

In practice, -13 peak normalize just makes the level lower.
That 13 db headroom is never used.
