This is getting to be a problem.
More than anything, this will be what contributes to the "demise" of Linux.
( if that ever happens )

One of the problems with Open Source, and it's strength, is that anyone
can put anything out there, and they do. This causes fragmentation.
It's one thing to provide an enhancement. It's another to re-write the
whole system in a not-so-compatible way. IMHO, a failing of FSF and RMS.

Last I counted, some years ago, there were 635 different OS all calling
themselves "Linux" one way or another. Today ???
That's kinda sorta like calling your OS Mach3.
Well, OK, but does that mean WinNT, or BSD-Unix ? Could be either,
or both ! Both were POSIX.
( POSIX was an OS compatibility standard. WinNT is POSIX.
 Win8 is a smartphone )

Linux is a kernel. Nothing more.
Ubuntu is an OS. So is Debian. ( although Ian is no longer involved, and
 Debbie never was )
 CentOS is Red Hat.
 So, Linux.
Yeah, well, is that Ubuntu, or Red Had, or the thing I wrote some years ago
that was a derivative of Slackware 7, or the very good RTOS LynxOS ?
( LynxOS is not a Linux at all, but it is source compatible )
Some actually qualify as a real UNIX, and some don't.

The PRIMARY difference is the directory structure, and what "features"
 each has, or lacks.
As long as they run over the kernel, Linux, they are binary compatible.
Therefore, you can find detailed information for one OS that addresses
your challenge specifically, yet is still useless to you unless you have a
real good understanding of what makes an OS, and why we use one.
( an OS is completely unnecessary, which is a strength of QNX, and most
every other microkernel based OS. The OS is merely a convenience )
(( some apps are OS dependent, which I consider a failing ))

It would be nice if there was a website called "What's the difference" that
was about various Linux based OS. It could even be a pay site.
 Hmmm.......
 Maybe I'll do that.
 Hey, Fred !
Do we need *another* project ?
 :)
