Big disagree. In times of the loudness war it is even more necessary to have a proper (loudness) normalization. Those days mastering is often done by teenagers who can use some DAW software but don't have any clue of mastering or for what it really is needed.

Loudnes normalization doesn't do any damage to the audio.
Maybe you mixed up normalization and compression.
