There may well be, none come to mind right now.

What I would do is this:

Install qjackctl.

Run it. Try to start it. If it starts, great, try to get some sound out of
it.

For instance, run jack_simple_client and it should connect and output a
test tone.

Stop it all, go to setup and play around with combinations of the following
settings:

Interface. (You may have more than one card, or you may choose between
default and the actual card.)

Sample rate. (Try 44100 and 48000.)

Frames per period. (For rivendell, I tend to choose on the larger side. For
multitrack recording, I tend to aim at the low end.)

Periods per buffer. (Try at least 2 and 3. Some cards will be happy with
either, some don't like one of them.)

Once I get this far, I like to mess a bit with a decently behaved
multitrack recorder like ardour or qtractor or traverso if your distro
still has it in the repos.

After you are good with jack and one of these, bring rivendell into the
mix.

Go to rdadmin->manage hosts->edit your host->jack settings:

X Start jack Server
Jack Server Name: Riv1
Jack Command Line: /usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:1 -r48000 -p4096 -n3

breaking that command line down for you:

-dalsa means use the alsa sound system
-dhw:1 means use sound card 1
-r48000 means use 48000 and not 44100
-p4096 is the frames per period setting (I told you I went large for riv)
-n3 is the periods per buffer setting. (I tend to go 3 with onboard sound
and USB sound.)

Here is another example:

/usr/bin/jackd -dalsa -dhw:CODEC -r48000 -p4096 -n3

The interesting bit here is:

-dhw:CODEC - instead of calling the interface by number, call it by name.
Find the name with:

aplay -l

I hope this helps get you started.

all the best,

drew
