I've been using Charter for years, since they started
offering net access, and used my wife's computer
(read:Windoze) as the base account and cloned her MAC
address. That said, I've gone through two routers
(wired and wireless) and both have faithfully served
my Linux box (several different installs), my Mac, and
my wife's computer with nary a hiccup. It seems
Charter would prefer you be "normal" at startup <grin>

My mileage has also been excellent. And it's been
virtually trouble-free, knock on Formica. Two days
down in over two years, and one was my fault. The
other was fixed in one phone call.
