never. not a serious option (imho)

ad 4.: How difficult is it to get hold of someone w/ clue [in phone hours] ?

4b. get rid of charter. they recently raised prices and my nv-bell dsl
    runs about as good, with slightly higher performance. Although takes
    about 1/2 hour of faq reading and fiddling to setup their ppp-o-e.

5. run freebsd as a fw router (with no mouse, graphics card etc.) and don't
   care.
5b. Once every 2-3 months I had to "reboot" the modem though.
