My domain of Linux distributions is limited, however: Debian - A stable distro, widely supported, easy to admin thanks to apt-get and a user large community. Desktop or server, but takes a little work to get going. RHEL3 - Vendor supported, easy to install. I would use this as a server os or cluster os. If you need a corporate desktop, then I'd vote for RHEL3 as well since it has a long (5 years) support period. Fedora Core - Home desktop, plenty of packages, easy to install, and community support. SOHO for servers since it is free and cheaper than RHEL, but no vendor support. Gentoo - Developer's desktop or test server. A savvy admin could easily make this a solid server distribution. Freebsd - Oh wait, this was a Linux distro preference. I'll spare you the "this wins hands down" comment. As a side comment, I fail to see the reasoning in paying for RHEL if you are a corporate user. If you have an educated IT staff, you should be able to have them provide the support that you would otherwise pay Red Hat for. It is like paying twice (I do like RHEL, just so you know).
