That's what they say, but I'm pretty sure it is just a slightly modified
version of Vserver.

Again, for most of what I do it is fine, and I don't want to discourage
you from going forward with it. I can only give my experience.

Really the only problem that I have is Disk I/O. CPU speeds are very good
as they are all multi-processor Xeon boxes. The really annoying this is
that I/O speeds are all over the map. Sometimes it takes a couple seconds
just to 'ls' a small directory, while others it is totally normal and
acceptable. Honestly it reminds of the bad old days of type 'users' on my
school's main Unix box only to see 200+ people logged. You just couldn't
depend on the reliability.

It might just be luck of the draw as well. If your mates are doing a lot
of I/O it could be a problem. If not, it might be a really good deal.

You can put together a pretty kick butt server now for under $1000, and
the hosting costs for me are about the same. My two vserver accounts run
me $60/month. Hostrack will host my box for $75/month. So yea I've got a
sunk cost in the box, but I plan to get 2 years out of it. So my hosting
costs are about $125/month. To me it is worth it since I use the hosting
service all the time for development and other chores. They way I
consider it is this what I do for my living, and there are some costs to
keep up to date.

Others will have to decide how much utility they get out of it themselves.

This is a bit off the subject, but I feel others might go overboard on
their desktop systems, where I tend to spend more on bandwidth and
hosting. My main development workstation cost about $350, and the
performance is very good. The 2.6 kernel seems even better. I'll always
choose more bandwidth and reliability over RAW CPU speed. I honestly
don't expect to pay more that $500 for a workstation ever again.
