Ah yes.  The external drive option.  Well, the only question remaining
is, will the ubuntu/ydl install disks support installing to an external
firewire/usb HDD.  I have an enclosure and a small IDE HDD around here
somewhere; I might just have to try that when my ubuntu CD-ROMs come in
the mail.  :)
