At least in the PC world, if you can boot from the usb device from the
bios, you can set up an initrd to have all the usb stuff you need to get
the system up and booted from the external disk. I'd assume there'd be
little difference on the PPC arch.

If Ubuntu and ydl don't support that out of the box, you can always
build your own initrd, but I'm willing to say it will work OK.
