I've been running Ubuntu for about 4 months on my laptop and it made me
realize that Debian is pretty awesome compared to RPM-based distros.
What you get after the super-easy install is a polished Gnome desktop
and environment, with Ubuntu-blessed Debian packages (all Gnome, not
much KDE here yet). If you want all the normal updates, you can add the
normal Debian packages in via a single click in Synaptec. They've also
adopted the sudo "no root login" way of handling the desktop, which
gives Ubuntu an OSX-ish feel.

There is a LiveCD you can download from Ubuntu if you want to try out
the latest beta release. It isn't as pretty as Knoppix from the CD, but
once it is up you'll see what it looks like if you did a full install.
