Each client both uploads and downloads pieces simultaneously. This is necessary to get the "swarming" effect which makes bittorrent so successful as a distributed protocol.

Not as true as it used to be. The new official client has support for "trackerless" service, and some of the clones such as Azureus have had similar functionality for a while.

Interestingly enough, the Register mentioned a new protocol from M$ that seems to combine some ideas from both BitTorrent and par2 to reduce reliance on trackers:

Might be interesting to see if BitTorrent can incorporate the idea, since it seems like a good one. It will also be interesting to watch from a GPL/patent perspective, since I'm sure M$ will attempt to "embrace, extend, and patent" despite the existence of prior art. :)
