Very true.. but some people might disagree with the "quite simply" part :)
It's not an entirely trivial thing to get right, especially if it's crashing
while saving the pfile.
My MUD has pfile save etc. on crash, but I haven't really seen any good
snippets for it floating around.  I may be wrong, I haven't visited the
snippet sites in a while.
