My point was that this prior statement:
"As far as I know, makedepend isn't something that's handed 
out on every server"

Is in fact, incorrect.
Whether or not you have the ability over the packages makes no difference
here.
Fact is 'makedepend' is a widely available utility across several Linux
distributions, and non-Linux operating systems.
