Afternoon gang, Thanks for the mention Jamie. X11 is required for certain programs, such as the Xemacs program which was a request by one of our clients [They prefer the features of this release, but use it without X support]. We maintain the X11 library on the servers as well for any developers to use. While we do have various X applications installed [such as the SETUP feature] these are all capable of running without the xserver. We do not have the Xserver itself installed on any of the boxes, nor the xfontserver or accompanying font packages. Removing access to any Xserver however is not difficult for those servers which may have a full install of X support. Not to start a debate over desired platforms, but from working on various OS platforms, RedHat standard distro is simply easier to configure from my point of view. Once the server has been secured, there is little difference in regards to text game development that an end user would notice.
Professional service should be measured by the quality of service performed by the provider, as well as their ability to ensure a secured developmental platform for their clients. Ensuring proper configuration and control of programs is a concern, I am certain for many Text Game host providers to include Kyndig.com.
