Hi David,
Kickstart the business process improvement / modeling effort using SWOT
analysis. Develop a Line of Business (LoB) strategy (sometime called a
Program Charter). You want to capitialize on the reusable assets projects
within the LoB can share and co-evolve. We are in a recession after all.
Start describing light-weight business use cases - main success scenarios
and some extensions. After describing the hows and whys of UML Activity
Diagrams to your business process engineering team (if they already don't
know), have *them* translate the business use cases into Business Workflow
diagrams. They now own this model. Also explain Activity-Based Costing to
then and have them compare business workflow scenarios.
Using JAD sessions, analyse each activity in the business workflow. Consider
if it requires or could benefit from IT support. If so, underlilne it.
Underlined activities become the name of system use cases. Describe your
system use cases. This way you have clear and simple traceability between
the business and the system requirements.
After that focus on describing a component specification archtecture. I have
found the ideas from UML Components and Business Component Factory to be
most valuable here.
Provision, assemble, test and deploy.
