Richard,
Thank you for the outline of business modeling techniques. What I am looking for is kind of "proof of the concept" examples - like company X implemented this approach and achieved good results Y and Z by improving its business processes. Some kind of real life case study. If you know some good references - please let me know. Thank you again. Develop a Line of Business (LoB) strategy (sometime called a Program Charter). You want to capitialize on the reusable assets projects within the LoB can share and co-evolve. We are in a recession after all. Start describing light-weight business use cases - main success scenarios and some extensions. After describing the hows and whys of UML Activity Diagrams to your business process engineering team (if they already don't know), have *them* translate the business use cases into Business Workflow diagrams. They now own this model. Also explain Activity-Based Costing to then and have them compare business workflow scenarios. Using JAD sessions, analyse each activity in the business workflow. Consider if it requires or could benefit from IT support. If so, underlilne it. Underlined activities become the name of system use cases. Describe your system use cases. This way you have clear and simple traceability between the business and the system requirements. After that focus on describing a component specification archtecture. I have found the ideas from UML Components and Business Component Factory to be most valuable here. Provision, assemble, test and deploy.
