It's a sound server that mainly provides a nice client interface for media
type apps - audio streaming, video streaming with plugins etc.  It's also a 
whole audio toolkit - allows you to create a plugin various components and
route them about (a bit like the RG Studio is intended to be at some point).

It has a big scope and at the time that we were looking at providing original
MIDI support that area was being developed quite quickly.  However it soon 
became so that we were waiting for features to appear in arts - it was holding
us up and didn't allow us the degree of control we needed.  While our arts 
driver isn't really up to date I like having it around - just in case - plus
it's a good exercise to have it there still.
