I've got a four year old SBLive and it works just fine with JACK. I can run softsynths, the synth on the SBLive and JACK audio simultaneously - no kernel tweaks, nothing out of the ordinary. My machine is the same spec as yours (1GHz Athlon) give or take a few MB of memory, there should be no problem. So you need a reasonably cheap soundcard plus you need a proper distro on CD/DVD so you can baseline your system if it ever starts playing again.
