I was shooting for that when I first started hacking on that code, but after
months of effort, it's nowhere close to working well enough to be a
fire-and-forget kind of thing that's reliable enough to use in such a
fashion.

This export filter is very similar to a translation program. Have you
filtered a document through Babelfish lately?

What you get out is usually vaguely comprehensible in a twisted sort of way,
but it's far from perfect. I'd say the Lilypond filter generally does a much
better job than that, and it's even useful occasionally, under tightly
controlled circumstances, but I have come to be of the opinion (Hans is
welcome to step in and disagree here) that using Lilypond as a hands-free
print filter is simply setting the bar impossibly high. Particularly once
the vagaries of parallel development are taken into consideration.

In any event, I think it's definitely desirable and necessary to channel
effort into further improving our native print facility. After Chris's last
go at that, it works rather well. It's not as pretty as Lilypond, but it
looks decent, and at least it prints what's on the damn screen time after
time.
