OK, I've committed the merge from the experimental branch. Some notes:

 * The tags are just_before_mmap_merge and mmap_merged.
 * It affected less code than I'd thought. (This may be a bad sign.)
 * The merge is not quite verbatim -- I removed the QObject dependency
   in Composition en route, by adding a CompositionObserver instead.
 * You'll have to do a make clean and a reinstall. I've tweaked the
   version number so it complains if you forget the reinstall.
 * It should definitely compile. Complain if it doesn't.
 * I'm pretty sure that playback is not working. I won't be able to
   look more closely at it until I've done a full build on the laptop,
   as I'm not in the room with the fast computer now: Guillaume or
   Rich, please feel free to investigate if you're on line now. It's
   probably something simple.
 * I've committed one change to the mmap code since the merge
   and tag, just to make it handle repeating segments. It was an
   obvious fix and I was at a loose end during a build. I'm 98% sure
   this is not what's breaking playback, as it should mean no change
   for segments that don't repeat.
