Yes, I think something like that is unnecessary.  The problem
seems simple enough: if you make an empty selection without shift
pressed, it should (and does) cancel any current selection; but
if you make an empty selection _with_ shift pressed (as you would
have when adding to a previous selection), it should be ignored,
and currently it isn't.

Seems like a straightforward bug.  Will fix.
