I thought that was what it did.  Perhaps I broke it in translation to qt4?

Nah, regardless of any other reasons to keep the rulers, I think
colour blindness is common enough that we should account for it where
possible.  We could do better than we do at the moment, in that
respect.

Also, I think the rulers are a substantial enough part of the current
interface that they shouldn't just be dropped.  That's altogether too
GNOME a decision for my taste.  Reworked, improved, simplified, even
in controversial ways -- fine, with good justifications.  Dropped, no,
not so keen.
