Hello Michael,
I need to set a couple things straight in this post and the next (well, at
least put my thoughts out there).
Hardware vs. USB MIDI:
----------------------
I have both.
* I have a PCI sound card with a MIDI port (My external multitrack recorder
sends MTC to RG and it received MMC from RG).
BTW works great in Thorn, not so good in Classic...
* I have a midisport 2x2 (do not buy one, the midi in stinks) (USB) I plugged
this in today to test things out. I use to have a Yamaha keyboard plugged into
it.
* I have a modern Roland Keyboard with USB MIDI
Our current logic does not differentiate among them. I've racked them and
stacked them and the lowest numbered ALSA port wins hands down every time among
the three MIDI devices.
Fire up a soft synth, the File->New in RG and it take the default. Works great.
...
So from this -- two things:
* We should (as a last resort) connect to a Hardware MIDI. I have three
devices that appear a hardware. RG better pick one of them. Why else would I
have three of them (all duplex).
* I would be frustrated if I loaded a soft synth and RG reassigned my RG Device
away from my hardware and to a soft synth.
It just sounds bad to me...and it not because I'm a minority with old school
equipment -- I have quite a mix these days.
I'm happy with the current setup.
....
Michael, you mentioned:
> I do think we should eventually go back to detecting new
> clients, and then
> when that works, we should think about plugging the hole in

Um... I just tried this.
* I fired up RG and went to the device manager.
* I launched KMIDMON
* Press the refresh port on the device manager & and new port appeared.
* closed KMIDMON
* Press the refresh port on the device manager & and port disappeared.
* Launched ZynAddSubFX
* Press the refresh port on the device manager & and new port appeared.
* closed ZynAddSubFX
* Press the refresh port on the device manager & and port disappeared.
We autodetect for new ALSA clients quite frequently, we just don't update the
device manager automatically.
That could be remedied after Thorn if you like. We might be able to emit a
change that the device manager could catch.
....
I'm still against "not connecting to hardware." You and I, Michael, can't be
the only people on the planet that use outboard gear.
Sincerely,
Julie S.
